What does it take to join the SES?
Volunteers can join the NSW SES at ages 16 and 17 but must complete a Parent and Guardian Consent form at the time of joining. Volunteers aged under 18 can still participate in most NSW SES activities but cannot attend incidents which may involve trauma, such as Road Crash Rescue.

What is it like volunteering for the SES?
The SES is almost completely Voluntary run. We as a team across NSW deal with floods, downed trees, leaks in roofs, road crash rescue and support missions (for example land searches with NSW Police). It is very rewarding for me personally because I get to help people and I love that.

The NSW SES is made up almost entirely of volunteer members, numbering over 10,214 as of July 2021. Members are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls.
