Derpy takes care of her younger siblings in absence of their parents. Derpy is also married to Doctor Whooves (as stated above) so that her name can remain the fan popular Hooves (actually spelled Whooves) instead of becoming Derpy Doo.
Why did they change Derpy’s name?
The episode’s writer noted that the character’s name in the script was originally Ditzy Doo, and she was requested to change the name to Derpy as a “tip of the hat” to the fans.

Original Version: “Now, careful, Derpy!” The reason why Derpy’s name isn’t mentioned anymore is simple: the übersensitives, who accused the series of making fun of the mentally disabled, could get upset.
